Don't eat that - you'll get zits!

We all heard of the so-called 'food is poison'-myth when it comes to seeking a connection between acne and food. But is it just a myth or is there any shred of truth in it? First of all, it is a fact that a healthy diet is important for improving raw materials for healthy skin. But at the same time it has been proven that greasy or sugary foods are not a cause of acne. Moreover, medics have stated that diets play no role in acne treatment in most patients and that even large amounts of certain foods have not clinically exacerbated acne.

Nevertheless, that does not give you the green light for making a habit of eating foods high in sugar or fat. Remember that because the skin is the body's largest organ, what is good for the rest of you will certainly be good for your skin. Even though food or diets are not a direct cause of acne, it has been shown that the chemicals released during the metabolism of certain food items directly influence factors causing acne. Moreover, this way the condition of pre-existing acne is being worsened.

The extra sebum production is the cause of acne, and this production is stimulated by the male hormone testosterone. What probably most people do not know is that meat also contains hormones, steroids and certain hormone-like substances; these are known to affect the hormonal balance of the body. Some beauticians say that women who regularly eat meat are more likely to get acne. Nine out of ten acne cases are caused by foods that can cause acne and only one is caused by actual body hormones.

Diets which contain high-fat content and dairy products cause acne to spread, whereas those based on the traditional low fat vegetables and fruits cause little or no acne in people. Also, hard to digest food or a sluggish digestive process is known to cause skin disorders and acne. Alcohol and caffeine should be avoided.

Also, people suffering from acne should stay away from sugar/sugary foods as cereals, cakes, biscuits, jams, soft drinks, food containing white flour (pasta, bread, pastries), canned food (because of the harmful effects of the chemical additives), fried, fatty and processed food (because of the toxins they contain). It is also believed that other causes of acne are pasteurized milk, cheese, cow's milk, margarine, yogurt, cream.

Those affected from it have to consume as much plant-based and fiber-rich food as they can. Water is very important (2 l/day will help your skin eliminate toxins) and it is also recommended to consume as much fruits and vegetables as possible, a source of antioxidants which contribute to the elimination of acne, whole grain, beans, oily fish for the compensation of fatty acids. Health depends on good nutrition, keep that in mind. To increase your chances of winning the battle against acne, use the substances the can help you as much as you can.
